Cloud Classroom: Google Apps for Education

AIM: Big KIPPsters will be able to utilize various cloud-based instructional tools to organize, manage, and drive online instruction in their classrooms.

The Enlightenment: Locke vs. Hobbes (6/21/11)

Standard 7.11.5: Describe how democratic thought and institutions were influenced by Enlightenment thinkers (e.g. John Locke, Charles-Louis Montesquieu, American founders).

Objectives: We will describe democratic thought was influenced by John Locke and Thomas Hobbes.

Task 1: Complete a Mastery Reflection for Skills Assessment #15. Use the Making Up a Standard in Humanities and Make Up Product List sheets to help you. I have shared these documents with you - check your email if you need to access these documents.

Task 2: Take a look at your 8th grade ELA summer homework here. Mr. Herrera will tell you which book(s) you are required to read this summer.

Task 3: Track Mr. Herrera as he presents The Enlightenment: Locke vs. Hobbes. Take Cornell notes on the next available page in your interactive notebook.

Task 4: Watch as Mr. Herrera shows you how to create a Wordle to show your understanding of the theories of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Take a look at Mr. Herrera's example. The requirements are as follows:

  • Choose 25 key words related to both Hobbes and Locke
  • Key words are words that are most important to understanding a topic
  • Use pages 402-403 to help you

Task 5: Finish your Locke vs. Hobbes Wordle. Your Wordle should show excellence in that it is organized, neat, and professional.

The Roots of the Enlightenment (6/20/11)

Task 1: For students who did not attend the EOY field lesson, you must correctly submit your presentations here. Track as Mr. Herrera shows you how to do this.

Task 2: Fill out the correct answer form for SA #15. Place it in the proper bin when finished. Then read silently until Mr. Herrera calls your attention.

Task 3: On your own, review the presentation titled Roots of the Enlightenment. Take Cornell notes on the next available page in your notebook. Get Mr. Herrera's signature before moving forward.

Task 4: Create a 4-box comic using MakeBeliefsComix.com. Take a look at Mr. Herrera's example. The requirements are as follows:
  • Box 1: Summarize how the Enlightenment grew out of the Scientific Revolution (p. 400, The Scientific Revolution)
  • Box 2: Summarize how the Enlightenment has roots in the Renaissance and Reformation (p. 400, The Renaissance and Reformation)
  • Box 3: Summarize how Enlightenment thinkers were inspired by classical culture (p. 400, Classical and Christian Influences)
  • Box 4: Summarize how Enlightenment thinkers prized reason over authority (p. 401, New Ideas Versus Old Beliefs)

    The Legacy of the Roman Empire (6/14/11 - 6/17/11)

    Standard 7.1: Students analyze the causes and effects of the vast expansion and ultimate disintegration of the Roman Empire.

    Objectives: We will analyze and explain how Roman art, architecture, language, and citizenship continue to influence our world.
