Reteaching West Africa (4/6/11)

Objective: We will learn about the geography of West Africa and the growth of kingdoms there.

Task 1: Review both presentations on the Fall of the Aztec Empire and the Fall of the Inca Empire. Also review your flow map (page 253) and double bubble map (page 254).

Task 2: Complete the Do Now.

Task 3: Track the presentation on Kingdoms of West Africa.

Task 4: On page 255 of your interactive notebook, draw a large double bubble map to compare and contrast living in the desert and living in the forest. What are the similarities? What are the differences?

Task 5: On page 256, draw a large circle map and in the inner circle write "Niger River." Then, in the outer circle, describe the ways this river helped West Africans.

Task 6: On page 257, draw a large flow map with 3 boxes. Use the flow map to describe how kingdoms were created in West Africa. (Hint: Use the slide titled "Kingdoms of West Africa")

Task 7: On page 258, write 2 tree paragraphs explaining (1) how Ghana's location helped it become powerful and (2) how Ghana eventually lost power. Be sure to include a Topic, Reason, Explanation, and Ending statement.

Task 8: Take out a clean sheet of paper and number it from 1-14. You are now ready to take today's Mini Skills Assessment. Write only the number and letter of the answer. Then turn your paper in to Mr. Herrera.

Early Finishers: You have two options if you finish early.
-Option 1: Practice your typing skills by playing a game here.
-Option 2: For extra credit, research our upcoming unit, The Renaissance, and create a preview poster or presentation to share with the class.
